Southern California, from Malibu to San Diego, has long been regarded as a beacon of options in the quest to help those suffering from drug addiction and alcoholism.  From detox facilities, to treatment centers to sober livings, there is absolutely no shortage here in LA!  The question, however, is where can a girl get the best loving guidance and support at a reasonable cost?  Where can she find the help she needs from people who care about sobriety; people who place positive change above all else?

We encourage you to read on and learn why A New Start for Women is unlike any other sober living in Los Angeles…  If you’re a woman over the age of 18 and you’re looking for a sober living that promotes a new existence and positive change, then we invite you along for the ride of your life!

Why Choose “A New Start for Women?”

There is certainly no shortage of sober living options here in Southern California. In fact, according to the Los Angeles Sober Living Coalition Website www.soberhousing.net, there are over 80 different female or co-ed sober living facilities within LA County. They range anywhere from $350 to over $10,000 per month and come in all shapes and sizes. In our many years experience however, the cheaper ones are often nothing more than a roof and a dirty mattress, while the expensive ones are pristine & poshy enclaves that offer a monthly rent cost equivalent to that of a mortgage payment!

Many treatment professionals within the Los Angeles Recovery Community are of the belief that this town has turned recovery into nothing more than an opportunity to turn a drastic financial gain off a family’s woes.  So where is the middle ground?  Where is there a women’s sober living facility that is centrally located, upscale, not overpriced, managed by a qualified individual and operates on the basis of positive change with no compromise?  Where can one find a sober living for women, by women and not entirely fixated on profit or prestige?

A New Start for Women is the culmination of many years experience in the world of drug addiction/alcoholism and various modes of recovery through the sober living perspective.  We have modeled the facility on the basis of creating a progressive, upscale and clean environment while not foregoing the key components that are critical to one’s early recovery.  Our hardwood floors, personal refrigerators and flat screen televisions are nice, but they will never take the place of our key mission in creating long-term, positive change in our client’s actions.

In our effort to create the optimal environment, we have established A New Start as a women-only facility since it offers a more comprehensive approach toward uncovering and dealing with issues that are commonly specific to women in recovery.  Additionally, it limits the likelihood of potentially damaging early-recovery relationships from forming between men and women.  We’ll discuss this element in greater depth on the Alcoholism & Addiction page within this site.

If you’re a woman suffering from alcoholism, drug addiction or other psychiatric disorders, we may be the place for you!  We invite you to read on and learn more, or visit our Contact Us page and give a call or send an email…  We’re very eager to hear from you!

Alcoholism & Addiction:

We could write an entire dissertation on this topic.  The mind of an alcoholic/addict is a very foreign and mysterious concept to those who don’t understand why it is we do what we do.  The idea that a person could throw away everything worthwhile in their life at the prospect of going out on a “bender” is entirely inconceivable to those of a “normal” mindset.  Of course, the term “normal” is relative altogether!

Let us first say that the terms “alcoholic” and “addict” are synonymous; they refer more to how the brain operates rather than the drug, liquid or behavior of choice.  Recovering individuals may choose to term themselves as an “alcoholic” or an “addict,” but the terms essentially mean the same thing.

As a recognized disease by the medical community worldwide, alcoholism is not a by-product of lack of will power, morals, ethics, etc.  Additionally, there is no known cure and simply removing the substance or damaging behavior from one’s life is only but a first step toward actual recovery.  A common misconception is that all we need to do is simply remove the drugs or alcohol from their daily existence and then everything will be just fine.  The reason for this is unless a complete change takes place within the thinking and actions of the patient, they are likely to revert to their old patterns after a period of sobriety.

Though there is no known cure for the disease of addiction, millions of successfully recovered individuals around the world have utilized 12-step programs such as AA, NA, CA, etc. as a means of arresting the disease.  The 12-step program focuses on creating a complete change of thinking, resulting in actions that are much more conducive to living a responsible and drug free existence.  Our instincts don’t necessarily change; it’s our response to those instincts that changes.  For instance, the thought of drinking or using will still cross our minds but how we respond to that thought will ultimately change, assuming there is a willingness and capacity to change.

Our Facility:

A New Start for Women provides a very unique and progressive type of layout for our clients.  We have taken our years of practical and theoretical knowledge and have extracted bits and pieces of many other sober living facilities in order to develop this unique environment.  In doing so, we have also kept the “cost” issue in the forefront of our minds in order provide the most, while charging substantially less that other facilities of equal grade.

The facility is actually comprised of 2 sectioned off levels offering their own locking entrances from a common foyer.  The lower level features 2 double rooms totaling 4 beds.  Each of the lower rooms includes their own newly remodeled bathroom and unusually large closet spaces.  The upper floor features 3 bedrooms with 2 newly remodeled bathrooms as well.  Likewise, each bedroom has more than ample closet space as well as dressers.  All mattresses, bedding and furniture are brand new and are of very high-end, name brand quality.

Since each floor is basically its own environment, we’ve equipped each with its own open kitchen, dining area, living area and entertainment components.  Among our many comforts, we provide:

  • A very clean and upscale home
  • Hardwood Flooring
  • Individual refrigerators for each client
  • Two separate kitchens, dining areas and living/community rooms
  • Newly remodeled components throughout the property
  • Flat screen LCD HDTV’s with Directv
  • Wireless Internet with a centrally provided house computer
  • Free washer & dryer
  • Perimeter security system with 24/7 recording
  • Locking front and individual room doors
  • Bi-weekly cleaning services for common areas
  • Brand new beds & linen
  • Central location within a couple miles of: the beach, UCLA, SMC, library, post office, shopping districts, Beverly Hills, Venice, Santa Monica & Marina Del Rey
  • And more…

In the final analysis, we agree that it is very important to make positive changes, both inside and out.  While we were drinking and using drugs we were often not concerned with living in a clean, amenity filled environment that was conducive to experiencing life’s comforts.  We aim to create a fresh outside so that our clients can spend more time healing on the inside and not complaining about lack of comfort.

Structure & Pricing:
The sober living model is quite vast.  We see facilities charging very little, yet are located in rundown neighborhoods and provide a dirty environment along with absolutely no structure
or guidance.  Conversely, we also see facilities on beachfront properties featuring personal chefs, private drivers and image_05varying levels of day to day structure, but the cost can be exorbitant.  It seems to be that in either scenario, the element of inner personal change is often compromised for a variety of external reasons.

As mentioned earlier, we have essentially taken bits and pieces of each various environment and molded them into a vision that promotes unity, sobriety and change while incorporating the necessity for the freedoms and privacy that an adult requires to move forward in their endeavors.

From a day to day standpoint, we require that each client completes a daily action plan for their day’s activities in order to remain accountable for their whereabouts.  Additionally, it is important that they remain in contact with the house manager in the event their plans change.  Our clients are typically involved in work, school, outpatient therapy, counseling, outside activities, etc.  We also require that each client actively participate in their choice of self-help environment, regardless of whether it be a 12-step program of their choice, religious and/or spiritual affiliation, or anything else that will provide a forum in which they can draw – and give back – a new spiritual type of strength to augment their sobriety.  image_03We highly encourage sponsorship and group activities in order to help them create new, healthy bonds with others whom have persevered in their own recovery.  We do have one mandatory weekly house meeting on Sunday Evenings in order to discuss internal house matters and to address any concerns and highlight personal accomplishments.

Unlike many other sober livings, A New Start for Women does not take a cookie-cutter approach.  We realize that each client has their own personal issues and responsibilities, and as such, we incorporate individuality in determining their restrictions.  Whether they need an overnight pass, extended curfew or any other deviation from house standards, we have absolutely no problem honoring such a need if the reason is just.  There are no minimum time requirements in order to request these types of exceptions and we realize the importance of extending additional freedoms in order to help one move forward in rebuilding their life.

There is much more we could say regarding our structure and unique approach toward the sober living model but we’ll go into greater depth upon your email or phone call.  We will happily take as much time with you as needed in order to help you 100_0329 determine if we are the right environment for you!

In terms of cost, our standard monthly rate is $1200 and we do require a move-in deposit of $300 which is fully refundable upon move-out.***  We understand that people go through financial hardships and we are always willing to discuss options in restructuring the cost on an individual basis, however, due to our beautiful facility, location and amenities, we have little room in which to move from our stated cost.

We encourage you to call or email us from our Contact Us Page and as we mentioned earlier, and we will happily answer all your questions and invite you by for a tour.

*** The $300 deposit is only refundable in cases in which the client moves out on good terms and provides us with a 14-day notice to leave.  If however, a client is asked to leave due to relapse or other behavioral problems, the deposit will, or will not be refunded entirely at our discretion.  The reason for this is because we turn away prospective new clients when our capacity is met, and when a client abruptly leaves due to their own conduct, we are then left with a vacancy that we were not able to plan ahead for and offer to a suitable new client.
